When Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson took the oath of allegiance as President in the Dallas-Fort Worth airport, some 16,000 American military personnel were serving in Vietnam. Johnson inherited Robert Strange McNamara as his secretary of defense and Gen. William Childs Westmoreland as his military commander in Vietnam.
