Brian Neary Toronto, Canada Participating in a group build on FSM's Forum, Brian modeled Eduard's 1/48 scale Nieuport 17 as the plane of French ace René Dorme, whose 23 victories earned him a place in France's Legion of Honor. Brian rigged the plane with Spiderwire fishing line. "This was my first serious attempt at rigging, and I'm very pleased," says Brian. He used Tamiya, Model Master, and Mister Kit acrylic paints and picked out details with Winsor & Newton artist's oils.
Chris Goodall Whangerei, New Zealand Hasegawa's 1/48 scale Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4 Trop represents an aircraft flown by Hans-Joachim Marseille, the "Star of Africa" who claimed 158 victories. Chris built the fighter straight from the box and painted and weathered it with Tamiya acrylics and pastels, respectively. "I'm a big fan of the 109," Chris says.
Colin Butler Houston, Texas Colin built Wave's 1/144 scale Engage SR1, a character from the manga series The Five Star Stories. "I chose this kit for its elegant and majestic design," Colin says of the mecha model.
Curtis Lingrell Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Building Revell's 1/48 scale Ju 87D straight from the box, Curtis concentrated on painting and finishing, using Testors and Humbrol enamels and a grimy wash to depict a war-weary Stuka. Curtis says it's his first attempt at airbrushing exhaust streaks.
Donald W. Capone II Waxahachie, Texas Eduard's 1/48 scale ProfiPack kit Bf 108B enabled Donald to build Willy Messerschmitt's personal ride (the military version would be the Taifun). Donald decorated the diminutive plane with a combination of kit and spare decals.
Steven Garner Ogden, Utah The reasoning was simple when Steven elected to build ICM's 1/72 scale jet: "I've always thought the MiG-31 was one cool-looking aircraft!" he says. He corrected details of the intakes, then finished with Polly Scale acrylics, pastel weathering, and decals from Linden Hill.
Gregg Yan Manila, Philippines Gregg built Skybow's Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) M41 Walker Bulldog to "represent one of the tanks retreating from Laos 1971," he says. He added numerous details, such as an additional .30-caliber machine gun, salvaged jeep seat, a stowage rack. Gregg says, "The entire tank was weathered with acrylics, modeling putty, sand, and chalk pastels - a process that took two weeks!"
Jeff Pollizzotto Levittown, New York Who could resist? It's a scratchbuilt Borg cube from the 1996 movie "Star Trek: First Contact." Jeff says, "Built over 10 months, this 10"-square, styrene construction has roughly 8,000 parts, 16 internally mounted LEDs, and more than 300 custom-made or commercial photoetched-metal parts covering the six sides. The model can be displayed on a wood base or this custom-built stand with 'Borg' lighting."
Ken Bowyer Roanoke, Virginia Commander Models' 1/350 scale resin model left Ken's workbench as LCI-26, which served in the South Pacific in World War II. The infantry landing craft earned eight battle stars through action including New Guinea, Morotai, Borneo, and the Philippines. The crew painted the shark's mouth on the bow in 1943, getting a mention from Japanese radio propagandist "Tokyo Rose," who said it made a good target for shore batteries.
Larry Uchmanowicz Dayton, Ohio With a top speed of 8 mph, the British Whippet was designated a "fast" tank in World War I. Larry modeled the speedster with Emhar's 1/35 scale kit, weathering it with pastel chalks and Tamiya powders.
Magellan Dufour Calgary, Alberta, Canada "I wanted to work on a simple but big Russian tank, and one that would stand out," says Magellan. Trumpeter's 1/35 scale KV-1 certainly fit the bill: Magellan added copper-wire handles, wrapped steel lines for tow cables, and used a soldering iron to inflict battle damage.
Mario Manuel P. Prado Manila, Philippines Mario's 1/72 scale A-6E Intruder placed first in its category at the IPMS/Philippines nationals in 2007 as he loaded the Italeri kit with detail sets from Airwaves and Eduard, installed resin seats from Aires, and scratchbuilt wing-fold mechanisms.
Mark Harris Cincinnati, Ohio Mark painted the MPC 1/8 scale "Star Wars" Imperial Speeder Bike with Polly Scale acrylics, then beat it up with a wash of pastel chalks mixed with Tamiya thinner.
Mike Foster Cape Town, South Africa He just happened to have the decals, so Mike built Occidental's 1/48 scale kit as a Harvard of the South African air force, recalling a childhood spent near an air base in Cape Town where he often saw flights of what Americans would call AT-6 Texans.
Pedro Moraes Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil "A friend of mine had this very old kit but would never assemble it, so I built it for him," Pedro says of the 1/72 scale Italeri C-47 Skytrain. "I used Eagle Strike decals because the originals were so old."
Peter Leabo Petaluma, California "A fascination with German innovations in WWII that had far-reaching implications for modern aircraft design" moved Peter to build Dragon's 1/48 scale Horten Ho 229A-1 and surround it with Luftwaffe figures and fuel drums.
Greg Murphy Everett, Washington Greg usually builds armor but took a break for a pleasure cruise with Midwest Products' Chesapeake Bay Crabbing Skiff. The model is 5/8"=1', or about 1/20 scale. Greg says he was inspired by the view of Puget Sound from his workbench.
Fernando Ignacio Moreno Villa Monterrey, Mexico Scratchbuilt antennas, radome, and Python III missiles, plus a resin Martin-Baker Mk.6 ejection seat, grace Fernando's IAI Kfir C.2, built from Italeri's 1/72 scale kit. Fernando's decals and paint "assigned" the Israeli-built jet to the Fuerza Aérea Colombiana (Colombian air force).
Richard Dowhower Bakersfield, California Richard souped up Revell's 1/24 scale 1940 Ford Street Rod with Model Car Garage carbs, plug wires, intake manifold, and photoetched-metal detail set. It's an old favorite with Richard, who built it more than 15 years ago.
Richard Marchiava Sarasota, Florida He usually builds jets, Richard says: "This is the first propeller-driven plane I've completed in a long time." His return to props was heralded by Trumpeter's 1/32 scale P-47D Razorback, to which he added Zotz decals - including nose art we can't show here!
Roy Kinsella Dublin, Ireland "Mostly a scratchbuilt conversion of Azimut's AML-60" is how Roy describes his 1/35 scale Panhard AML-20. "It represents an Irish Defence Forces vehicle used by the Irish Army in Liberia during a 2006 United Nations peacekeeping mission."
Will Snyder Great Falls, Montana "I first saw a picture of this scene in an encyclopedia, then again in Squadron's Sherman in Action book, so I decided to build it," says Will of his wintry 1/35 scale diorama. He built Tamiya's Panther G from the box but swapped Tamiya's Sherman turret for one from Italeri, which also supplied the jeep and trailer. "There are 17 scratchbuilt standing trees, and probably six on the Sherman," he says.
Joseph Russo Valencia, California Joseph painted HobbyBoss' Easy Build 1/72 scale Dewoitine D.520 in Axis camouflage and gave it Bulgarian markings.
