Handy, dandy handle

Here is a variation on the idea of screwing a handle to a tank hull for painting.

I drill a pilot hole in the end of a piece of 1" dowel. Then, I put a drywall screw about 1 1⁄2" into the hole to thread it. After removing it, I cut off the screw’s head and twist it into the threaded hole. Now I have a handle I can screw into a hole drilled in the underside of the model.

Using a 1" auger, I bore a hole most of the way through a short section of 2" x 4" lumber. The handle can now be slipped into the hole, making a very stable base to support the model while working on it as well as between paint sessions while drying.
