Making the unhinged work

I wanted to pose the rear canopy of a Bristol Beaufighter open, but I was worried about it being easily broken off because there wasn’t much of a gluing surface. I added .040" x .060" strip styrene hinge blocks to the canopy frame. Then, I drilled holes to accept steel wire bent at about 45 degrees. After super gluing the wire in blocks, I located and drilled the holes in the fuselage canopy rail. I made the wire longer on the fuselage side for support and ease of installation. Now all that was left was to slide the canopy into position – no glue necessary.

Incidentally, I salvaged the wire from a local music store. When they restring instruments, the old strings go into the trash. I asked if I could have some of the old strings, and now I have enough wire to last for 10 or 15 years.
