Before submitting photos of your builds to FSM, take a look at this guide.

Below are 5 quick tips to keep in mind when photographing your model. Follow them to show off your model in its best light. To the right are reader-submitted images that follow these suggestions.

Tip #1: Strive to have a well-lit model.

Use a 3-point lighting system.

  • Position three sources of light around the model: A Key light on one side provides a primary light source, a Fill light on the other side to fill in the shadow, and a Backlight behind to make the model "pop” from the background.
  • All of this light equals an illuminated subject with few shadows.
  • You can use lamps from around your home to achieve this.
Avoid using the flash on your camera. Usually this light comes across as too harsh.

If you are shooting with a DSLR, try changing the settings to use the camera in manual mode. This allows you control the exposure to ensure the image comes out right. Close the aperture to make the image more focused, and slow the shutter speed if you need to make it brighter. Just make sure you use a tripod.

Tip #2: Shoot your model against a clean, uncluttered backdrop.

  • A solid-color back sweep works best.
  • You can also you a clean bed sheet — but make sure to iron it first.
  • If shooting on a table, clean it and take away objects on top of it.

Tip #3: Frame your photo well.

If you need composition inspiration look for images in FSM's Reader Gallery and Product Reviews and emulate those you like.

Your whole model must be in the picture.

  • You can send in detailed shots as well, but we must have one picture of the whole build.

Tip #4: Choose the right subject matter.

FSM is a family show.

  • No nudity or profanity.
  • No political antagonism.

Tip #5: Send FSM a large file.

Look at your file size/resolution. Digital photos must meet publishing standards.

  • Images must be at least 2,000 pixels wide.
  • Images should probably be no less than 2.5 MB in size.
  • If you are unsure if it is the right size, you can find this information by right clicking on the image and going to ‘properties’

Then send in your photos! We want to see your work. Click this link to submit a picture of your masterpiece!
