More incredible scale models and figures

Andrea Miniatures 54mm Comrades in Arms, Moscow, 1825

Joe is critical of the figure models he chooses, looking for dimensional and anatomically correct poses. "If hands on a piece are out of scale, the only solution is to replace them," Joe says. "The same goes for the subtle shift of the hips in a standing figure." In his opinion, everything about this model was right.

Using artists oils, Joe put down Prussian blue for the uniforms' base coat, and applied black and white and various browns to shadow and highlight the folds. Flesh tones were a combination of Winsor & Newton flesh tone for a base, then adding yellow, brown, white, and Old Holland Barok red and purple for shading, highlights, and to show the effects of a Russian winter.
In the November 2013 FineScale Modeler, we saw many of Joe Fleming's amazing scale figure, armor, and aircraft models. Here, we take a closer look at two of those models -- the Romeo 75mm Crusader Knight and Andrea Miniatures 54mm Comrades in Arms -- to explore how Joe paints realistic clothing and flesh tones. Also included in this gallery are several other of his models that we couldn't shoe-horn into the print magazine. Enjoy!
