As a busy professional with a family, my modeling time is limited. Taking a model to work on during business trips gives me something to do and lessens the impact of my hobby on family time when I am home. But, traveling with models means getting from Point A to Point B with all of the pieces. I use the relatively new, tough plastic boxes with locking lids available from office supply stores.

The advantage of these boxes over regular shoebox-sized containers is twofold. First, they are incredibly tough; even the large, flatter ones are hard to crush. Second, the locking lids keep all of the parts together.

There are several brands, but the one I particularly like is the “Really Useful Box.” It comes in a bunch of sizes and shapes, from smaller than a pack of playing cards to large office storage boxes. The small boxes are great for storing tiny parts, such as aircraft ordnance, tank pioneer tools, and weapons. The large, flat 4-6 liter boxes will hold a complete 1/48 scale fighter jet or almost any 1/35 scale tank, and it still fits in a carry-on bag. When I’m home, the boxes keep parts safe from the carpet monster during long breaks between modeling sessions.
